Usually when Thanksgiving gets mentioned what immediately comes to mind first are those delicious desserts and other dishes and that spectacular roasted turkey.

Well, the food is a big part of your celebration but it isn’t the only component of the Thanksgiving season. Thanksgiving’s really a noteworthy occasion for us to happily celebrate and thank our creator together with family and friends for blessings we have so far received.

1) Sarah Hale, an editor of a woman’s magazine, is credited with having Thanksgiving declared as a national holiday by writing to congress for several years.

2) The very 1st Thanksgiving was celebrated during 1621 by Pilgrims. It was also said their Thanksgiving celebration was a total of 3 days.

3) Original name/term for Pilgrims was actually Puritans.

4) Turkey wishbone is considered a charm for good luck so grab it before anybody else gets it. Have fun looking!

5) Before being harvested and sold, a cranberry must bounce at least 4 times before it is considered as not too ripe.

7) 102 Pilgrims were said to have been aboard the Mayflower who were coming to America (New World).

9) Abraham Lincoln was the President who made Thanksgiving a national US holiday and before he declared it so, Thanksgiving was celebrated whenever the Governor of a state said so.

10) Thanksgiving is always celebrated on a Thursday because this was the Puritan’s mid-prayer week day.

11) Pumpkin pie was not yet served during those early Thanksgiving celebrations during the 1620’s because ovens were not yet invented at that time.

12) Approved table manners for Thanksgiving were: eating with your hands; spitting on the floor; throwing bones into the hearth after eating.

13) Not everyone was traveling to the New World to settle, some of these travelers were just out to get furs and lumber to send back to England.

14) Pilgrims traveling to the New World via the Mayflower actually spent 66 days at sea before reaching land again. That’s how long it was before to travel.

15) In October of 1777, George Washington declared an “All Colony Thanksgiving” because he was feeling great about his victory over Sarasota.

You could allow them to enjoy making some crafts together, maybe jump into some pile of autumn leaves, watch that big game, or involve them in some games like Pictionary and don’t forget saying your poems and prayers for Thanksgiving, talking about what made them feel great over the past few months because Thanksgiving is supposed to be all about thanking the one above for the blessings that you have received. But of course aside from spending time with people close to your heart it also means that juicy mouth watering turkey will be served altogether with that perfect stuffing, or freshly made cranberry red sauce, or that melt inside your mouth pumpkin-pie.

By tradition, celebrating Thanksgiving night usually involves the turkey, pumpkin-pie, sweet potato dishes, freshly made cranberry red sauce then some stuffing. But how about celebrating Thanksgiving nights with just a twist, create favorite Thanksgiving recipes with something exciting and unique but not deviating or going overboard on the traditionally plan set of menu.

For starters try something different by serving your guests some appetizers and some drinks. This usually isn’t considered as one kind of Thanksgiving tradition but you may start this tradition with just your guests. Try serving crackers with cheese, then maybe create cheese balls that looks alot like turkeys then offer them some hot drink of apple and cinnamon cider and include some spike by putting liquor for those adults, perhaps some wine for them to taste, and for your little guests create some red-orange punch with bits of fruits.

You may stick to just your special turkey as your main food during Thanksgiving meal; then try cranking it up by including some special delectable spices, fresh lemon squeezed juices, orange flavors, some liquor, walnuts and cranberries, or just about anything that you think would simply compliment the turkey dish. Some fantastic turkey recipe alternatives includes roasted ham with bits of pineapple, herb flavored roasted chicken, or roasted beef draped with that delicious gravy sauce. Twist your ordinary cranberry red sauce with something different by mixing some fruits or including some berries like raspberries and other fruits that goes perfectly well with you dish.

Cheddar Corn Casserole Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 c of melted butter
1 pc of chopped onion (large)
1 pc of chopped bell pepper (green, small)
1 pc of chopped bell pepper (red, small)
3 pcs of eggs (fresh)
1 c of sour cream
16 oz of creamed corn (canned)
1/3 c of cornmeal (yellow)
1/4 tsp of salt
1 c of cheese (Cheddar); grated
1/4 tsp of pepper

Instructions:

Preheat the oven at (350 degrees F). Heat (2 tablespoons) butter inside a pan above moderate heat then add bell peppers & onion. Cook till softened while stirring constantly.

Take out from the heat and set aside. Combine (6 tablespoons) butter, (sour) cream, and eggs inside a bowl; beat thoroughly until it becomes smooth.

Add cornmeal, creamed corn, salt & pepper; mix thoroughly then add sauteed mixture and cheese. Transfer onto a greased baking pan (or dish). Bake for 30-35 mins until golden and puffed.

Crockpot Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

8 pcs of potatoes; sliced thinly
1 can of soup (Cheddar cheese)
1 c of cheese (Velveeta); chunked
1-1/2 c of cheese (sharp Cheddar); grated
12 oz of evaporated filled milk
Pepper
Salt

Instructions:

Spray a vegetable (cooking) spray on a crockpot. Fill in potatoes (half full). then layer (1/2 can) soup, (1/2 cup) Velveeta, (3/4 cup) Cheddar, and (1/2 can) milk.

Season with salt & pepper. Layer (1/2 can) soup, (1/2 cup) Velveeta, (3/4 cup) Cheddar, and (1/2 can) milk. Cook above high heat for six hours. Add milk if needed.

Turkey Breast Braised With Garlic And Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

1 c of rice (long-grained)
14-1/2 oz of chicken broth (canned)
1/2 c of wine (white)
2 tsps of parsley (dried)
1/2 tsp of rosemary (dried)
1/2 tsp of thyme (dried)
1/2 tsp of sage (dried)
1 pc of bay leaf
6 lbs of turkey breast (bone-in)
3 pcs of garlic cloves: cut the root ends
Paprika

Instructions:

Preheat the oven at (350 degrees F).

Combine wine, broth, rice, parsley, sage, bay leaf, thyme, and rosemary inside a (Dutch) oven. Place the turkey above the rice mix; sprinkle the paprika onto the turkey. Place the garlic, with cut end facing up, in the rice and around the breast of the turkey.

Cover with aluminum foil then the lid then bake for about three hours, until the meat inside the thigh reaches (170-175 degrees F). Let the turkey stand for 10-15 mins.

Carve the turkey then place the slices on a platter. Place the rice mix on a bowl and squeeze the garlic onto the rice and turkey.

Mincemeat Pie Recipe


Mincemeat Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

1-1/2 c of mixed fruits (pears, apples, apricots, peaches, prunes, and figs); dried
1/2 c of dates; pitted
1/2 tsp of cinnamon (ground)
1/2 tsp of allspice (ground)
1/4 tsp of nutmeg (freshly grated)
1/8 tsp of salt
1/2 c of cranberries (dried)
1/3 c of sugar (white)
1 Tbsp of cornstarch (dissolved in 2 Tbsps of water)
2 c of water
2 Tbsps of brandy
3/4 c of pecans; chopped coarsely
1 pc of egg yolk (large)
1 Tbsp of sugar
2 recipes of pastry dough
1/2 Tbsp of water

Instructions:

Combine dried fruits, salt, sugar, dates, and spice inside the processor; process until coarsely chopped. Transfer onto a large saucepan then add cranberries then water.

Cook over very low heat, do not let it boil; stir frequently till the fruit becomes tender and mixture is very thick.

Add the dissolved cornstarch; stir constantly. Add the brandy; stir thoroughly. Take out from the heat and let it cool.

Place inside an airtight container and place inside the refrigerator for a day. This can be stored to one week.

When needed, take the mincemeat out from the refrigerator (change into room temperature). Preheat the oven at 375 degrees F.

Get half of the dough (but keep the rest chilled) and roll above a floured board and flatten to 13 inch round.

Fit it to the 9 inch pie dish then trim the edges, leave a half inch overhang. Let it chill for half an hour, uncovered till it becomes firm.

Place the pecans in shallow (baking) pan and toast inside the oven (middle rack) for four mins or till its color becomes dark.

Add the pecans onto the mincemeat; stir thoroughly. Spoon onto the crust and spread evenly.

Roll the other half dough above floured board and flatten to 1/8-inch thick. Cover the filling then trim the edges, leave 3/4 inch overhang.

Fold the overhang underneath the edges of the base of crust. Seal by pressing the dough and crimp the edges decoratively.

Combine yolk with (1/2 tablespoon) water then gently brush on the crust. Sprinkle sugar then poke holes on top using a fork. Place inside the oven (middle rack).

Bake for half an hour or more until the crust turns golden. Let the pie cool. Serve warm.
